Located at 2300
miles (3680 km) from the nearest landmass, the Hawaiian Islands are the most
isolated group of islands on the planet.
The islands were
born of volcanic eruption 100,000 years ago, being never connected to any other
continent, the archipelago acquired only those plants and animals that arrived
on wind and sea currents.
By the time
the Polynesians made their way to the archipelago of HawaiiI, it was already
teeming with an array of diverse native flora.
Approximately
1000 species of flowering plants are native to the Hawaiian Islands, 89% of
which are endemic to the region.
To preserve
the flora and prevent introduction of non- native species State of Hawaii has
very strict agricultural rules. It is a federal offence to bring any plant or
seed from mainland US or other countries to Hawaii.
Some plants
have leaves that are so bright, bold and beautiful that they almost look like flowers. Here is collection of few such photographs taken not in a day but gradually over months.
